Coeur d'Alene is the largest city in the northern Idaho Panhandle and has grown significantly in recent years. This is due in part to a substantial increase in tourism, encouraged by several resorts in the area. The area offers spectacular scenery, as Coeur d'Alene is located on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, giving rise to the nickname "Lake City." Two major ski resorts, Silver Mountain Resort to the east in Kellogg, and Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort to the north in Sandpoint, are located nearby.
With over seventeen hundred employees, the largest employer is the Kootenai Medical Center. It is the primary medical center serving the Coeur d'Alene and north Idaho area.
The traditional base of Coeur d'Alene's economy was the natural resources sector. Surrounding forests provide timber for mills to convert to boards and plywood. The Silver Valley to the east was at one time the richest mining district in the world. These industries provide many jobs, as does tourism and its related businesses, whose payrolls exceed $100 million.
Advances in telecommunications operations have also attracted large customer service centers to the area including three Verizon Communications order processing centers, two Center Partners call centers providing customer service for telecommunications companies, and a Coldwater Creek center taking catalog orders. U.S. Bank opened the county's newest customer service center serving credit card customers in Coeur d'Alene.
